About Us

The Commonwealth of Dominica , also known as the “Nature Island” is located in the Eastern Caribbean and sits between the two French islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. On the 18th September 2017, Hurricane Maria ravaged Dominica with winds up to 175mph causing island wide devastation to infrastructure and left 90% of homes without a roof! The destruction of the hurricane and crucial need for assistance, compelled many Dominicans in the diaspora to actively work towards raising funds to help with the rebuilding of Dominica, and we the small but devoted community of Dominicans in Slough, got together and started to do just that! The response and support to our cause so far has been immense, and we thank you, as we are doing it all for

So far

Ok, so, you know who we are, now to let you know what we have done – its been amazing, already! On Saturday 18th November 2017, we held a Dinner & Dance fund raising event in Slough, attended by Her Excellency Miss Janet Charles, Acting High Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Dominica. Over 200 tickets were sold! It was an evening boasting Caribbean rhythms, fabulous food and sensational raffle prizes donated by the local community and commercial businesses – once again thank you!!

On the 26th November 2017, a Thanksgiving Mass was held at St Anthony’s Church to remember those lost in the wake of Hurricane Maria and to give thanks for strength, unity and peace in the rebuilding of Dominica. We were privileged to have the presence of Her Excellency Ms Janet Charles, Acting High Commissioner of Dominica and the Mayor of Slough ClIr Ishrat Shah. We raised a phenomenal £4,500 from our first events. Doing it All for Dominica!

Plan of Action

On the 16th January, all of the donated items that we received such as clothes, toiletries, homeware, linen and building items, were sent to the Disaster Recovery Team in Dominica. Also the items that we purchased with funds from our fund raising event will be heading to their recipients. The medical centers will receive, painkillers, disinfectant, bandages, sanitisers and blood pressure monitors. The Infirmary will receive 2 wheelchairs, walking aids, hygiene supplies, cleaning products and bed linen. The primary school will receive exercise books, paint, crayons, wall charts and educational games.

What’s to come:

  • Seek out other schools and medical centres and find out their requirements
  • Plan our next major event
  • Decide & schedule activities for 2018.

We are a long term support organisation, and will continue to help Dominica until it is rebuilt better than before!
