What we have been doing

SDA WEBSITE LAUNCH

Good news! We are excited to let you know that we have launched our website and it is now live. We really hope you like it. We will also publish our events and updates on the website so keep an eye out. Visit our new website https://sdauk.org.uk

HERE’S WHAT WE ARE DOING FOR DOMINICA NOW

Fundraising has been very limited since the start of the pandemic, as we have not been able to hold our annual dinner and dance or any dance events but we continue to support and bring some relief to our beautiful island of Dominica.

This year we are providing support to the following places in Dominica:

New Town Primary School                        Salisbury Health Centre

Castle Bruce Health Centre                       Wotten Waven Health Centre

The Breadfruit House Foundation             St. Luke’s Primary School, Pointe Michel

The schools will be receiving exercise books, writing materials, art and craft supplies, posters and thermometers for science projects. Salisbury Health Centre will receive two wheelchairs. Castle Bruce and Wotten Waven Healthcente will both receive nebulisers and infrared thermometers, finger pulse oximeters, bandages, plasters, dressings and general medical supplies. In addition, Castle Bruce Health Centre will receive a blood pressure monitor and Wotten Waven will receive an ear otoscope. The Breadfruit House Foundation will receive arts and craft materials.

Donations to assist with purchasing and shipping costs would be very much appreciated however small. If you would like to support us with a donation this can be done through our website https://sdauk.org.uk

Thank you for any support you are able to give

UPDATE ON WHO WE SUPPORTED LAST YEAR

  • The Dominica Infirmary
  • Salisbury Village Health Centre
  • Salisbury Primary School
  • Bellevue Chopin Health Centre
  • Petite Savanne Nursery
  • Savanne Paille Primary School, Portsmouth

Thanks to all those who worked hard to load the container and a joint effort with Help For Dominica, our supplies were shipped to Dominica in February 2020 and arrived in March 2020. The container had to be put in storage due to the pandemic, until it was safe enough to start distributing. Gradually by the end of April 2020 each area collected their supplies.

The Dominica Infirmary received 10 wheelchairs and a nebuliser. Salisbury Health Centre received a nebuliser, ear otoscope, blood pressure monitor, infrared thermometer, bandages, plasters, dressings and general medical supplies. Bellevue Chopin Health Centre received a finger pulse oximeter, a nebuliser, dressings and bandages. Both Salisbury and Savanne Paille Primary School received exercise books and stationery such as pens and pencils and paper. Petite Savanne Nursery received arts and crafts supplies, reading and colouring books, jigsaw puzzles, puzzle mats and toys.

Two articles appeared in EMONEWS following our efforts.

HELPING THE HOMELESS AND SLOUGH OUTREACH

We have continued to provide Slough Outreach with food supplies to help the homeless and vulnerable in the Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead area and with the with the help of a donation from the Global Cooking Theatre in December 2020 we purchased food containers, coffee cups and knives and forks for Slough Outreach to feed the homeless. In May this year we supplied them with a number of drinks cartons.

FAMILY BOOK CLUB JOINT VENTURE

JOIN US

In collaboration with the Jamaican Association Slough (JAS), Vision Impression Black Expression (VIBE) and Slough Library, we started a Family Book Club about our culture. The idea came about because of Black History Month. The book club takes place monthly and engages the family, children and adults to read and discuss books about our culture. There are three age groups. Age 6-8 have been reading “Little Leaders Bold Women in Black History” by Vashti Harrison, ages 9+ reading “Black and British: a short history” by David Olusoga and ages 16+ have just finished reading “Black and British: a Forgotten History” by David Olusoga. In January 2022 ages 16+ will start reading “Natives: Race and Class in the ruins of Empire” by Akala.

The sessions are taking place via Zoom.

GLOBAL THEATRE COOKING PROJECT

Slough Dominican Association have been involved in a Global Cooking Theatre project together with  VIBE and HOME Slough. The project took place online via Zoom and involved local people who volunteered to cook a meal and show others how to prepare and cook it. At each session the participants were given a list of ingredients so they could cook together as they watched, then they re-joined to eat their meals together and chat. With recipes from Europe, South Asia, the Caribbean and Africa it was a chance to share tips and learn about other cultures.
